Hello everyone! Due to recent events in my life such as catching up with university work, going on holiday to Spain and starting a new job I haven’t be able to blog as much as I’d like 😦 Here is a catch up of all the events which have happened within the gaming world recently just to catch you, and me up.
Game Developers Conference
25th to 29th March 2013 saw the Game Developers Conference (GDC) being held in San Francisco, California, to catch up in full visit the following link http://www.gamasutra.com/gdc-2013 Companies who attended the event included Blizzard Entertainment, Microsoft, OnLive and many more! Sony did not attend this event, I believe they are saving the best for E3 later this year, TechRadar quotes “A room full of potential PS4 developers got a run down of the system’s architecture, design philosophy and online features. However, as local multiplayer fanatics, we loved hearing that the system will use its controller tracking to automatically swap split screen, should players rearrange themselves on the couch.” Personally it will be interesting to see what will become of this and how it works, if it goes well perhaps other developers will look into this in the future. UMB Tech Game Network have confirmed that GDC 2013 attracted 23,000 attendees, the largest crowd in the show’s history. Future game ‘Battlefield 4’ seventeen minute footage was leaked, the footage is shown below.
Electronic Arts Boss denied there is any link between video game content and “actual violence”
Video Games and Violence is a topic of personal interest and hype in the gaming world as many gamers know video games do not cause violence, here are links to my other blog posts which feature this topic https://pwnersmanual.wordpress.com/2013/01/17/a-brief-look-at-video-game-violence-a-political-and-video-gamer-view/ and https://pwnersmanual.wordpress.com/2013/02/21/video-games-and-violence/
John Riccitiello, the boss of EA voiced the thoughts of many gamers in which he says video games can instead be good and they do not cause for any gamer to become violent or take part in violent acts.
Disney cancel the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ game
Sad news for any fan of Star Wars and gaming LucasArts has been closed by Disney. Star Wars 1313 which had a demo at E3 in 2012 will no longer go ahead. This game was set to place “players in control of a deadly bounty hunter as he uses an arsenal of exotic weaponry to hunt down his marks and uncover the truth surrounding a criminal conspiracy.” However LucasFilm spokesperson Miles Perkins, spoke to BBC, saying production on Star Wars 1313 has simply been “halted.” Therefor this game could still get the go ahead at some time in the future.

A game which in particular i am really excited about its release is BioShock Infinite. Not only is this game one of the best games released in March it could also possibly be one of the most anticipated and exciting games to be released this year. Having the release date already been pushed back twice (October 16th, 2012 and February 26, 2013) this game will finally be released on the 26th March, I decided to discuss this game ahead of its release and see what adventures await before us. Published by 2K games and developed by Irrational Games.
First-person shooter PS3, Xbox 360 and PC
About the game
Set in 1912 you become Booker DeWitt, a main character and also a a former Pinkerton detective. The storyline we know of so far is short, the main goal is to find Elizabeth, a young woman who’s gone missing and been held captive in the floating city and return her unharmed. Unfortunately we can tell it won’t be simple otherwise then the game would be very short. She is guarded by Songbird, a monstrous, winged creature who has become her only friend.
Drawing off the two previous BioShock games (BioShock and BioShock 2) the game could very likely be another game with its main focus being on the story line this may not appeal to all gamers, however if you do like games which have a lot of shooting then this game could be worth playing and switching between a shooting game and this to gain the fast pace, BioShock previous games have been very deliberate and paced. There is also a possibility of the story line continuing further. Like previous BioShock games, the player has the option to use a combination of weapons, gear, psychokinetic powers granted through “vigors” against his attacks.
Breaking away from the underwater setting of the first two games most of the action takes place in a floating city held aloft by dirigibles. The floating city is supposedly Columbia, once a symbol of America’s success as a nation, floating around the world as a traveling World’s Fair, a marvel of human innovation. Hence the logo being similar to a torn American flag with a Carnival twist. If you would like to discover more view the trailers or a special look into the first 5 minutes of BioShock Infinite at the end of this post.
In 2011 Bioshock Infinite was announced as the big winner of E3 with four awards. They are;
- Best of Show
- Best Original Game
- Best PC Game
- Best Action/Adventure Game
For a full list of winners see the Game Critics Award link at the bottom of this post.

When is E3?
This year E3 is on 11th to 13 June at Los Angeles Convention Center, California. The show hours are; 12:00PM – 6:00PM on Tuesday 11th June 2013, 10:00AM – 6:00PM on Wednesday 12th June 2013 and 10:00AM – 5:00PM on Thursday 13th June 2013. Please note all times are Pacific Time Zone, UTC-8.
What is E3?
E3 stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo. If you want to be among the first to know anything that happens in the gaming universe then it probably will be announced or revealed at E3. As quoted on the website the event;
“…draws tens of thousands of professionals to experience the future of interactive entertainment. The most influential people leading the most innovative companies in the industry attend E3 to see groundbreaking new technologies and never-before-seen products for computers, video game consoles, handheld systems, mobile and social, and the Internet.”
This is the largest trade show and covers all aspects of gaming. You cannot rightfully be a true geek until you have either been lucky enough to attend or sat on your laptop at home watching live the latest streaming of E3 coverage. (Or so that is my definition) An Expo floor pass for all 3 days will set you back $795 ($995 after 29th April 2013), a Industry pass is free with the catch being you have to be a qualified Interactive Entertainment Industry, meaning professionals only.

If you are a Nintendo fan then you’ll like this. Nintendo has confirmed that the next Super Smash Bros. game, which is to be a new 3D Mario game and a Mario Kart for Wii U will make their debut at E3.
