Video Games: Benefits of Playing

 (catch up)

Only a couple days ago we posted a blog discussing the latest topic in the video game world, and also popular outside the video game world too, which is if the violence we see in video games does have an impact on us, the players.  For those who would like to read the post here is a link; https://pwnersmanual.wordpress.com/2013/01/17/a-brief-look-at-video-game-violence-a-political-and-video-gamer-view/

Video Games

The benefits

Full of strategy and strength, today, in this all new post, it is time to discover the reasons why playing video games are good for you.

  • They can help ease pain

Although you do not feel any pain direct (well at least we hope you don’t!) while playing video games there are two studies which prove just how video games can help the player to feel less pain.  The most recent study, conducted by Keele University (based in the United Kingdom) in 2012, shown that you can increase your pain tolerance by as much as an impressive 65% even if the video game is of violent content.

The other study,  was conducted by the American Pain Society.  In 2010 the society focused upon video games,  carried out the research by looking at what benefits playing a video game had on patients who are undergoing serious procedures.  This led to the discovery that when the patients are immersed in a virtual world, allowing them freedom, they became not only significantly less stressed but also less trepidation.  The study results also show a decrease of around 30 to 50% in pain for burn wound care patients.

  • You can become more creative

Remember as a child when you used to love playing with a cardboard box.  Although it was not just a cardboard box to you, it could become anything you wanted, whenever you wanted.  Such as a dragon or a secret hiding place leading into another universe.  One of my personal favourites was after putting up the Christmas tree my sister and I used to sit in the box it came in while our dad (poor guy) dragged it (with us in) around the living room.

Over time, having to adjust to the adult world, this creativity can unfortunately fade.  It is with playing video games that you can get this creativity back.  Although the study was initially done on children, there could be an pass into our adult like…and atleast telling someone you play video games to further you creativity will sound good right?!  Linda Jackson, professor of psychology and lead researcher on the project at Michigan State University discovered this.  In 2011, Entertainment Software Association revelaed that around 72% of American households play a video game.  She surveyed 491, middle school, 12-year-olds and then assessed how often the students used different forms of technology.  These included playing video games, internet use and mobile (cell) phone use.  The researches used mostly the ‘Torrance Test of Creativity-Figural’.  We believe this to be that, firstly, each child was handed the form of an egg shape on a blank sheet of paper, they then were required to think of a unique picture to could draw with this shape and write a story about what they had just drew. The second stimulus was a picture of an elf lying in front of a small pool of water, staring at its reflection, every child then had to answer a collection of hypothetical questions about it.  The results shown the relationship between video game playing led to the greatest creativity.

  • Better eyesight

Did anyone else used to get told as a child that eating carrorts would help to improve your eyesight and belive it?  I did.  Now,  thanks to the University of Rochester, New York, I and now you too, can inform them that a 2007  study discovered after just 30 hours of “training” on a first-person shooter, this can result in a significant boost to your spatial resolution (the ability to clearly see small, densely packed together objects).  If they want more convincing explain in 2009 a further study, conducted by the same university, found that players of action games can become up to 58% better at perceiving fine contrast differences. Guess Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell must have played many video games while he was younger.

“If you are driving at dusk with light fog it could make the difference between seeing the car in front of you or not seeing it,” Quoted by research leader Daphne Bavelier.

  • Boost self-esteem

Who needs to and watch the latest television show when playing the latest video game is better for you.  Three researchers, Dr Penny Sweetser, Dr Daniel Johnson and Dr Peta Wyeth,from the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, made a discovery that playing video games can be more beneficial for a child than watching television.  Watching television is a passive experience (you just watch) whereas playing a video game involves the child and allows them to be active and involved in what they are doing. More than 92 per cent of Australian homes have at least one device for playing video games  Although the majority of children aged two to five exceeded government recommendations of a maximum of one hour of ‘screen time’ per day.  Analysing data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children the researches found children aged two to five spent, on average, some two to three hours watching television compared to less than a half hour playing video games.

Remembering that computer games are an  interactive experience, it is this research which shows this experience boosted children’s self-esteem, cognitive skills such as problem-solving and, in some cases, physical activity levels.

  • Become a faster decision maker

After discovering that video games help to improve your eyesight the researchers at the University of Rochester, New York, decided to see what else you can improve by playing video games.  This time, in 2010, cognitive scientists discovered that while you play a video game, being more immersed in the game, instead of the world around you, can be a good thing.  Being involved in the game it helps to “develop a heightened sensitivity to what is going on around them, and this benefit doesn’t just make them better at playing video games, but improves a wide variety of general skills that can help with everyday activities like multitasking, driving, reading small print, keeping track of friends in a crowd, and navigating around town.”  The research was carried out by playing 50 hours of video games over multiple weeks. It is important to note that it is fast action paced games, such as Call of Duty, which have this effect.

Other benefits include;

  • Tackle Mental Illnesses

  • Improve Motor Skills

  • Increase Social Activity

  •  Help the Elderly Avoid Serious Falls

Special Report: PlayStation 4 (PS4) The latest surrounding rumours

2013 sees the release of two very different rival consoles.  The Xbox 720 and the PS4.  With the Xbox720 already being covered, (here’s a link for anyone who would like to read it https://pwnersmanual.wordpress.com/2013/01/14/special-report-xbox-720-the-latest-stage/) it’s time to focus on the, soon to be, arrival of Sony’s PlayStation 4.

Rumours are speculating that Sony are to hold an “apple-like” event to announce the PS4 to the world.  In order to have an “apple-like” event you will need a main speaker, a conference with people in the respecting field and the all important press for publicity.  The annual Game Developers Conference (GDC),  being held on the 25th to the 29th March 2013 (expo dates 27th to 29th March) in San Francisco  California presents the perfect opportunity for this.  Although, there is still the possibility of the announcement being made around 11th to 13th June at E3 in Los Angeles in California.

(Update: Kazuo Hirai CEO of Sony  has announced today (21st January) that it will let Microsoft make the first move.  This could lead to Microsoft announcing the all new 720 at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California held on 25th to 29th March.  Therefore maybe the new PS4 will be announced at E3)

Whenever the announcement happens all eyes will be awaiting to see if Sony have decided to continue with the 18 button DualShock controller they are known for globally.  If this does happen it could drastically change not only the video game business for Sony but also other companies will await the reviews.  If they drop the DualShock controller for an LDC touchscreen will this then lead to an impact on future Xbox’s and game consoles?  With the 720 also being released this year it does not look like Microsoft will make any similar drastic changes soon.

Time for a makeover?

Launching more than 16 years ago,

3rd December, 1994 – Japan
9th September, 1995 – North America
29th September, 1995 – Europe
15th November, 1995 – Australia

the world was able to lay it’s eyes on this; what is known to many as the first of the ubiquitous PlayStation series.

PlayStation

By March 31, 2005, the PlayStation and PSone had shipped a combined total of 102.49 million units, becoming the first video game console to reach the 100 million mark.  Every time Sony add on to the PS family they make certain that  they continue to push limits and boundaries.  The original PlayStation really does own it’s title as a “classic” and has given many children and adults great memories of continuous hours of game play.

Now come March…or June we may see this;

PS4                      or                  PS4

The image on the left is taken from the “Official PlayStation 4 Magazine” website, a link will be at the bottom of this post.

This does seem impressive and clearly shows the modern menu, which we have seen on other PS consoles, along with several options.

The image on the right is taken from the website “Geeky Gadgets”, again a link will be at the bottom of the post.  Here we do see the DualShock controller but what is interesting is it’s built around a screen.   This would certainly allow for better cross play experiences especially between the already great consoles PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.  Featuring a touch screen would certainly raise competition with the WiiU.

Mock up designs are now appearing on the internet with some looking great and featuring the essential buttons along with the new screen.  For more mock up designs see the Push Square link below,  this one is my personal favourite,

Whatever it will look like people are speculating biometric sensors, a processor with a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops, if this sparks true it will be 50% more powerful than Xbox 720.  A downside is one rumour sees the PS4 ignore the possibility of backwards compatibility and focusing firmly on the next generation, this means if you want to continue playing PS3 games it’s best, for now, to keep hold of your PS3. You never know one day it could be useful for vintage gaming.

If the PlayStation 4 real name changes to become known as Orbis or Omni. Whenever it is released, possibly December 2013,  Sony will not disappoint and release another great console ready for gamers and PS fans everywhere to have many fun hours of game play on.

UPDATE 7th February 2013

One of Japan’s biggest newspapers, the Asahi Shimbun, has run an interesting story they hint towards the new PlayStation 4 will cost over 40,000 Yen, or about $430/£270/€320.  Interestly they only converted the price from Yen into $, perhaps Europe may have to wait a little longer for the PS4.  For more on this story see ‘The Verge’ link below.

Special report: Xbox 720; The latest stage

Xbox logo

After much speculation last year, particularly at E3 (a major gaming event in Los Angeles California), Microsoft have released details of an announcement about the Xbox 720 is due in March 2013. Please note all information on this page is based on sourced, reasonable speculation or/and rumored features.

There are many assumptions to be found based on the successor, such as exactly what it will feature, the price and release date/month.

They have decided to go against announcing the arrival at this year’s E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) event, which is held on 11th to 13th June 2013. Instead in March an “Apple-like” event is to be held where they will announce Xbox 720 (code-name speculations include ‘Durango’ or ‘Kryptos’) to the world, and clearing up rumors once and for all.

(Update: Kazuo Hirai, CEO of Sony, has announced today (21st January) that it will let Microsoft make the first move. This could lead to Microsoft announcing the all new 720 at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California held on 25th to 29th March.

On the day of the announcement Pwnrsmanual will post a special blog featuring all the latest news.

The, soon to be a classic, Xbox 360 was launched in 2005 over 7 years ago, then retailing at $400 – around £279.99.

Popular video game website ‘Gamespot’ has said the following about the release date;

“Microsoft will hold dedicated events prior to the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo (June 11-13, 2013) to finally unveil these machines…Sony and Microsoft will hype the consoles during E3 2013 itself before shipping the systems to retail during October and November, respectively.”

While ‘Christian Post’ has estimated that the release date “could be as early as June 11”

With Xbox talking about Smart Glass and Kinect at last year’s E3 event it will be interesting to discover if these will feature on the new 720. It will certainly raise the bar once again for the gaming industry. ‘Tech hunter’ assume:

“…the Xbox is speculated to feature the much-awaited Blu-ray support, 8GB of RAM, directional audio, TV input and output and an innovative controller to increase the level of experience. The new controller is alleged to be similar to Nintendo Wii U’s second screen controller… The Xbox 720 is rumoured to operate on Kinect 2.0 and sport Augmented Reality (AR).”

With many Xbox games soon to be released on the 720, ‘Pocket-lint’ quote “Halo developer Bungie’s next game, a MMO first-person shooter called Destiny, will be released in Autumn 2013 for Xbox 360 and…the Xbox 720”, could this be the first game for 720?

One thing can be certain; all eyes will be on Microsoft Xbox at this year’s E3 event as they can rightfully show off the highly anticipated creation.

(Update: 17th January 2013 – Ubisoft have announced a new release date of August 2013 for the latest addition of the ever popular game ‘Splinter Cell’. It will be called ‘Splinter Cell: Blacklist’, where we will see the return once more of Sam Fisher. Could this new release date (originally announced ‘Spring 2013’) hint at a release date around October/November 2013? This will allow for people to still buy their game, which is available now to pre-order for Xbox360, PS3 and PC and save up some money for the console.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: 7th February 2013

If you have ever wanted your Xbox to understand what you are saying soon this might just become a reality! According to an IGN report, the latest rumour surrounding the Xbox720 is that it will be able to understand your own voice. So as well as using Kinect to motion detect you physically it will have Apple’s “Siri-like” technology and can understand any questions you may want to ask. Going even further, your Xbox will also respond back to you with answers to your queries with some form of automated voice. Quote from IGN;

The rumor seems to fall in line with reports last year, which included a Microsoft job listing for the next-generation of Kinect, focused on developing on the “future of user input.”

This does seem to be the ultimate conclusion with the “future of user input” ,it is hard to consider that they do mean something else.

Some other additional features which would be great I personally think are, Blu Ray, more powerful than before, HD graphics, exclusive games, a large hard drive and reasonable pricing.
