Video Game songs

Okay guys so for a while I’ve known about this song “2-Player Co-Op (Player 2 Press Start) for those who haven’t heard it click on the link below.  It is a great song basically about a cute video game/gamers relationship by Danny Wiessner ft. Tori Lee.

More recently another song titled “The World Is Saved”  became known to me via IGN Boards.  Although different people and a different story line, this is about what Heroes do once they have saved the world, click on the link below to listen.

I began to think about Video Game Music, not the video game music that you can hear while playing the game but moreso music that is about video games, are there any songs like this that you like?  Do you have a favourite?  Comment below to let me know! 😀

New Assassins Creed Hero

Say goodbye to Connor

Say farewell to Connor

Assassins Creed III may only have been released a few months ago the next game in the series is already being planned.  Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently announced that there will be a different Assassins Creed hero in the next installment of this popular franchise, due for release sometime before March 2014. The reason behind this guess is that Yves Guillemot stated “Assassin’s Creed game is coming in the 2014 fiscal year.” Ubisoft’s next fiscal year will run from April 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014.

The news ultimately results in *sniff* no more of the protagonist Connor.  Upon hearing the news my first thought initially were what is to become of the hood? Will the new character have a hood at all and if so how can they improve upon it?  I understand to some this might seem unusual it is a statement of who he is, plus it does also look good.

Yves Guillemot stated the the next installment will see an “all-new Assassin’s Creed hero, within an all new team and time period” and it will be “another major leap forward for the franchise“.  Of course we can not wait to see what is instore, not only for us gamers but also the new hero.

With the previous installment being set during the American Civil War this leaves open a wide time period of when the next installment could be set.  The Escapist magazine quote;

Gamers have purchased more than 12 million copies of Assassin’s Creed III since its October 2012 launch.

Proving just how popular this franchise has become among gamers. Whatever is in store more news will come “very soon”.

Check out this previous post featuring a life size Connor figure;

Special Report: PlayStation 4 (PS4) The latest surrounding rumours

2013 sees the release of two very different rival consoles.  The Xbox 720 and the PS4.  With the Xbox720 already being covered, (here’s a link for anyone who would like to read it it’s time to focus on the, soon to be, arrival of Sony’s PlayStation 4.

Rumours are speculating that Sony are to hold an “apple-like” event to announce the PS4 to the world.  In order to have an “apple-like” event you will need a main speaker, a conference with people in the respecting field and the all important press for publicity.  The annual Game Developers Conference (GDC),  being held on the 25th to the 29th March 2013 (expo dates 27th to 29th March) in San Francisco  California presents the perfect opportunity for this.  Although, there is still the possibility of the announcement being made around 11th to 13th June at E3 in Los Angeles in California.

(Update: Kazuo Hirai CEO of Sony  has announced today (21st January) that it will let Microsoft make the first move.  This could lead to Microsoft announcing the all new 720 at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California held on 25th to 29th March.  Therefore maybe the new PS4 will be announced at E3)

Whenever the announcement happens all eyes will be awaiting to see if Sony have decided to continue with the 18 button DualShock controller they are known for globally.  If this does happen it could drastically change not only the video game business for Sony but also other companies will await the reviews.  If they drop the DualShock controller for an LDC touchscreen will this then lead to an impact on future Xbox’s and game consoles?  With the 720 also being released this year it does not look like Microsoft will make any similar drastic changes soon.

Time for a makeover?

Launching more than 16 years ago,

3rd December, 1994 – Japan
9th September, 1995 – North America
29th September, 1995 – Europe
15th November, 1995 – Australia

the world was able to lay it’s eyes on this; what is known to many as the first of the ubiquitous PlayStation series.

By March 31, 2005, the PlayStation and PSone had shipped a combined total of 102.49 million units, becoming the first video game console to reach the 100 million mark.  Every time Sony add on to the PS family they make certain that  they continue to push limits and boundaries.  The original PlayStation really does own it’s title as a “classic” and has given many children and adults great memories of continuous hours of game play.

Now come March…or June we may see this;

PS4                      or                  PS4

The image on the left is taken from the “Official PlayStation 4 Magazine” website, a link will be at the bottom of this post.

This does seem impressive and clearly shows the modern menu, which we have seen on other PS consoles, along with several options.

The image on the right is taken from the website “Geeky Gadgets”, again a link will be at the bottom of the post.  Here we do see the DualShock controller but what is interesting is it’s built around a screen.   This would certainly allow for better cross play experiences especially between the already great consoles PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.  Featuring a touch screen would certainly raise competition with the WiiU.

Mock up designs are now appearing on the internet with some looking great and featuring the essential buttons along with the new screen.  For more mock up designs see the Push Square link below,  this one is my personal favourite,

Whatever it will look like people are speculating biometric sensors, a processor with a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops, if this sparks true it will be 50% more powerful than Xbox 720.  A downside is one rumour sees the PS4 ignore the possibility of backwards compatibility and focusing firmly on the next generation, this means if you want to continue playing PS3 games it’s best, for now, to keep hold of your PS3. You never know one day it could be useful for vintage gaming.

If the PlayStation 4 real name changes to become known as Orbis or Omni. Whenever it is released, possibly December 2013,  Sony will not disappoint and release another great console ready for gamers and PS fans everywhere to have many fun hours of game play on.

UPDATE 7th February 2013

One of Japan’s biggest newspapers, the Asahi Shimbun, has run an interesting story they hint towards the new PlayStation 4 will cost over 40,000 Yen, or about $430/£270/€320.  Interestly they only converted the price from Yen into $, perhaps Europe may have to wait a little longer for the PS4.  For more on this story see ‘The Verge’ link below.

Snow Day, Missions and Gaming

It’s a snow day here in the United Kingdom.

The Met Office have issused a rare ‘Red’ weather warning for Wales,

‘Amber’ warning for East Midlands, East of England, London & South East England, North West England, Northern Ireland, South West England, Wales, West Midlands and a

‘Yellow’ warning for Central, Tayside & Fife, East Midlands, East of England, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, London & South East England, North East England, North West England, North West England, Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, South West England, South West England, Strathclyde, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber.

While we understand this does cause distributions for most civilians, here at PwnrsManual we love the snow.  Ever since I was a child I’ve loved waking up in the morning’s opening the curtains and seeing the whole garden completely covered in snow.  My sister and I would dash outside to make a snowman and have a snowball fight.  Then returning to a warm house, drinking hot chcolate and admiring our (what we thought then was perfect) snowman for days.

If, like I do, you love then snow then, like you do in gaming you have been presented with an opportunity to complete, not just one, but two missions, if you are feeling adventurous

  • Go outside and play in the snow, build forts, make snowman, have snowball fights, just make sure you have willing participants, or even go sledging if you are near hills,
  • Or, use this time to stay inside, treat yourself to your favourite hot drink (here, it’s a Caramel Mocha) and play your favourite video game, or perhaps the latest addition to your video game collection. While occasionally looking out of the window admiring the snow.

Even if you are not in the United Kingdom then why not still treat today as if it is a snow day and play your favourite game.  I know I will be spending half my day outside in the snow and half attempting to complete ‘Splinter Cell: Convicition’.  The mission has begun.

A brief look at video game violence – A political and video gamer view

In the United States of America gun violence is an on-going problem. Many people want to see the numbers of gun crime decrease and in order to do this, to find solutions; they look at what the causes of gun violence could be – even before the tragic Newtown massacre of 26 people, which includes 20 children, which happened on 14th December 2012. Although this has now made American Politicians want to create a new legislation, which, when in place, could prevent a similar tragic event from occurring again.

People have often wondered if playing video games can consequently lead towards gun violence. Vice President, Joe Biden, met with video game industry representatives on Friday 11th January 2013 to discuss possible solutions. They were discussing whether playing video games does create gun violence. He has headed up, along with President Barack Obama, twenty-three executive orders and a number of suggestions (One of which is a requested allocation of $10 million to study violent media) to the Congress.

In today’s society, while it is important to note that not all video games consist of having an act of violence in them, it is the more popular video games that do feature violence in them. (For examples of popular video games see previous post;

In a talk with Casey Lynch, who works for IGN, Adam Sessler, the Executive Producer and Editor-in-Chief of Revision3 Games was quoted saying, “We cannot ignore that the primary virtual interaction in the majority of popular games is an act of violence.”

This blog post is neither agreeing nor disagreeing; it is quite simply showing important and relevant facts to discuss.

A study done by Keele University, showed that “violent video games help increase your pain tolerance by as much as 65%”. This means that video games can be an effective way of easing pain. This study was aired on NBC on September 27, 2012.

(For more information on the study see ‘NBC – In Game’ video link at the bottom of this post)

Before coming to any conclusions, in order to have a knowledgeable argument it is important to not only consider, but study, both sides.

One reason why video games are being accused for violence is that, quoted from NBC,

‘”Wayne LaPierre, the executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association, has blamed Hollywood and the video game industry for the rash of U.S. shooting sprees. There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people,”’ he said in a controversial speech last month, citing video games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat. He called such games the “filthiest form of pornography.””

(For more information see ‘NBC link’ ‘will biden target violent video games and should he?’)

Although upon hearing this, California senator, Leland Yee, entitled this claim “mind-boggling.

A 2006 study, which was done by researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine, conducted MIR Brain scans on a group of 44 adolescents. Half of which played

“…the high-octane but non-violent racing game “Need for Speed: Underground.” The other was the ultra-violent first-person shooter “Medal of Honor: Frontline.””

Afterwards the brain scans of the people that played the violent video game showed an increase in emotional arousal – and a corresponding decrease of activity in brain areas involved in self-control, inhibition and attention.

(For more on this study, visit the ‘NBC’ link, ‘does game violence make make teens aggressive’)

Interestingly two recent studies discovered that college students who teamed up to play violent video games later, showed more cooperative behaviour and sometimes less signs of aggression, than students who played the games competitively. David Ewoldsen, co-author of the studies and professor of communication at Ohio State University, wanted to go ahead with this study as he realised that the previous studies have all been looking at how players are individually, whereas now a majority of people use the game and consoles that they are playing on to connect with other players, not only on a national level but also international. “If you’re playing with a rival, and that rival is cooperating with you that violates your expectations — you’re surprised by their cooperation and that makes you even more willing to cooperate…the point is that the way you act in the real world very quickly overrides anything that is going on in the video games,” Ewoldsen said. “Video games aren’t controlling who we are.”
